![]() Electric Firefly Design & Creation is the design showcase of arts student and former problem child Simon Goldstein. Working from Sydney's inner west, he draws inspiration from the patterns of nature that surround us in plants, animals and even the stars above.
The underlying principle of Simon’s work is to recreate this 'natural aesthetic', using basic geometry to create exquisite 3-dimensional objects from humble 2-dimensional formes. "Good design is not always about utilising the latest technologies," he says, "sometimes you have to go back to basics." And it makes good sense on reflection: the universal appeal of seashells, for example, is largely due the very simple geometric process by which they form. Apparently. Simon’s partner in crime, cyber operative Joshua Liebmann, offers comment on the workings of the Electric Firefly mind: "To be honest, I really don’t know what goes on in his head, but it works. He did attempt to explain his design process once, but I decided then to let the designs speak for themselves." Electric Firefly turns waste plastic into light fantastic by using material recycled from industrial and household offcasts. This heat- and UV-stabilised polymer sheet uses no toxic chemicals like chlorine, mercury or cadmium in the manufacturing process, so the whole process (and finished product) is completely non-toxic. On top of that, packaging is kept to a tasteful minimum and is made from 100% recycled cardboard. Completely versatile, any Electric Firefly shade can also be used as a table lamp, nightlight or centrepiece for all occasions. Flat-packing, hardwearing, and easy to clean, Electric Firefly lamps will find any number of uses in the home or commercial environment. Electric Firefly Design & Creation has been keeping it real since 2002. |
